Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: 19th February 2007

Here are a list of frequently asked questions, if you do not see an answer for your question, please contact us:

When is registration normally?

Registration for each outdoor season is normally held on 2 Saturdays around March break. We advertise the dates and times in the local newspapers, at the Sunoco gas station, in the King Township "Parks and Recreations" booklet and on this web site.

I missed registration, can I still register my child?

Our mandate is the provide soccer for all children, and we will do everything to get children on to a team. Unfortunately once uniforms have been ordered and teams balanced, it can be a little difficult. We leave extra registration forms at the Schomberg library, please fill one out and contact us once you have done this, and we will then try and meet your request.

When does the season start?

  • For U4 and U6 players, the season starts around 1st or 2nd week of June.
  • For U8 and U10 players, the season starts after the May 24th weekend.
  • For Youth players, the season starts 1st or 2nd week in May.

What do I need to provide for my child ?

  • Soccer shoes with moulded studs or moulded bars.
  • Shin pads
  • Own personal water bottle

For players under 10 and under, this equipment can be purchased at Canadian Tire.

For older players, who are looking for better equipment, the closest soccer store is in Newmarket, next to the Newmarket Soccer Club at 26 Wilstead Drive Newmarket, Ontario L3Y 4T9

Can my child wear a hat to practice or games?

We do not allow hats to be worn during a soccer game. It has been known for a ball to hit the beak of the hat, and cut the players face. Goalkeepers can and do wear baseball hats, but even this we do not advocate.

What are the guidelines regarding jewelery?

No jewlery is allowed to be worn during practice or a soccer game. It has been known for earings to be ripped out of ears, and rings to cut another players eyes.

What equipment does Schomberg Soccer Club provide?

Socks, shorts and shirt.

What is provided in the registration fee?

Soccer equipment, a trophy and year and "soccer event"

Why are we associated with the King City Soccer Club?

Please read the following memo [more]

How can I help out my child's team?

Each team has a coach, but also requires a manager and an assistant. The Manager can help out with communications to other players, organizing snack schedules and other administrative things.

Assistant coaches are also valuable, helping with practices, organizing the players and the equipment being used while the coach is explaining the purpose of the drill for example.

The biggest help, is to provide the Schomberg Club Executive with useful and informative feedback.

How long are games and practices?

  • Practices normally start at 7pm and run until 8:15pm. Some coaches will like to start and end their practices half an hour early.
  • Games start at 7pm, and for U10s and below will run for about an hour. For Youth players, the games vary in length depending on what age group they are in, but will run no longer than 90 minutes.

Snacks at game or practices?

Snacks used to be called refreshments, which is a better description of what should be brought to a game. Baked goods, 7-up, coke, even candies are not good choices. Fruit such as water melon or oranges are a better choice. Popsicles are also enjoyed by the kids, but it would be better if these can be given after the game or practice and not during.

Hydration

On those hot sweltering days, it is a good idea to make sure your child drinks plenty of water (2 hours?) before the game or practice. Water should also be consumed during breaks in the game such as half-time or at the end of the game.

It's raining will be child's game be on?

A game will always be played unless it there is Thunder and Lightening in the area. Rain makes it fun ......

I would like to coach, are there prerequisites?

For our younger age groups (U10 and below), the only perquisites is that you are organized, energetic and like to have fun with the kids. For the older age groups, we would prefer that the coach has at least a level one OSA coaching diploma.

If you want to become a coach, we encourage you to obtain the OSA coaching diploma. The course is normally one Saturday from 8am to 6pm, requires a lot of running and ball work, but is well worth the time. Please check out the coaching section for more information.

Beginning in the 2005 soccer season we will require a York Region Police Screening check.
